Madrid is a ghost town located in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. It sits east of the Rocky Mountains' Front Range. The town is quite high up, at an elevation of about 6,590 feet (2,010 m).
You can find Madrid on the west side of Las Animas County. It's along State Highway 12. The town is about fourteen miles (23 km) west of Trinidad.
Madrid got its name from Hilario Madrid. He settled there in the 1800s, coming from New Mexico. The town is not named after Spain's capital city.
History of Madrid, Colorado
Madrid was first called Madrid Plaza. It was set up as a place for settlers in 1864. Hilario Madrid and his brother Juan Madrid officially claimed land there in September 1879. The town even had its own Post Office. This Post Office served the community from 1882 until 1917.
