The History of Magnet

Magnet was officially created in 1893. This happened when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway built its tracks to this spot. The founder, B. E. Smith, named it "Magnet." He hoped the town would attract new settlers, just like a magnet attracts metal.

Magnet's Motto and Disasters

Magnet has a special motto: "Magnet: The town too tough to die!" This motto came about because the town has faced many disasters.

In February 1925, a big fire burned down one whole block of Main Street.

Then, two tornadoes hit Magnet. The first one struck on June 18, 1937. It caused a lot of damage to homes and businesses. Thousands of people came to see the damage. But the town worked together to clean up and rebuild with help from nearby towns.

The second tornado hit Magnet on May 6, 1975, at 2:45 PM. This tornado was also very strong. It destroyed two homes and badly damaged many others.

After the 1975 tornado, a lumber truck from a nearby town brought wood to help people make quick repairs. The town lost electricity and water. Firefighters from Wausa, a neighboring town, brought generators for power. Workers fixed the power lines, and it took over a week to get everything back to normal. Drinking water was brought in milk cans. Many people from other towns came to help clean up during that summer.

The Railroad's Role

The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad connected Magnet to other towns like Randolph and Bloomfield. When travelers arrived in Magnet in 1894, there was only a simple platform and an old boxcar to unload their things.

Around 1905-1906, almost everything arrived by train, including mail, groceries, and farm supplies. In the winter of 1948-1949, the weather was so bad that no train came for six weeks! By the 1950s, the train only came three times a week. The train tracks were finally removed in 1965.

The Old Jail House

Magnet's jailhouse was built around 1902. It had bars on the windows to keep prisoners inside. Before it became a jail, it was used as a voting booth.

In the 1960s, the building was moved and made bigger. It was then used as a county shed. Sadly, this building was also destroyed by the tornado in 1975.
