Móði and Magni facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Magni and Móði are two important figures in Norse mythology. Their names mean "strength" and "bravery" in Old Norse. They are the sons of the mighty god Thor, known for his incredible power. Magni and Móði are said to embody their father's best qualities.

Magni's mother is Járnsaxa, a giantess who was a lover of Thor. However, the mother of Móði is not mentioned in the old stories.

Magni and Móði: Sons of Thor

Magni and Móði are minor gods in the Norse stories. They are often mentioned together because they are Thor's children. While Móði's role is less known, Magni plays a big part in one famous myth.

Magni's Incredible Strength

Magni showed his amazing strength when he was very young. This happened during a big battle involving his father, Thor.

Thor's Battle with Hrungnir

Thor once fought a powerful giant named Hrungnir. Thor hit Hrungnir with his famous hammer, Mjölnir. The hammer struck the giant's head and shattered his skull. Hrungnir fell to the ground, dead.

But as Hrungnir fell, his leg landed on Thor's neck. Thor was pinned down and could not move. Other gods, called the Æsir, tried to lift the giant's leg. They pulled and pushed, but Hrungnir was too heavy. They could not free Thor.

A Young Hero Emerges

Just then, Magni arrived. He was only three days old at the time! Despite being so young, Magni walked up to his father. He easily lifted Hrungnir's giant leg off Thor. Everyone was amazed by his incredible strength.

Thor was very grateful to his young son. As a reward, Thor gave Magni Hrungnir's horse, named Gullfaxi. Gullfaxi means "Gold-mane" in Old Norse. This was a very special horse.

Odin's Displeasure

Not everyone was happy with Thor's gift. Odin, Thor's own father and the chief of the gods, was upset. Odin thought Thor should have given the horse to him instead. He was also bothered that Thor gave such a valuable gift to "the son of a giantess."

Móði's Future Role

Móði is not featured in as many stories as Magni. However, he is mentioned in prophecies about the future. Móði is said to survive Ragnarök, the great battle that ends the world. After Ragnarök, Móði and Magni are expected to inherit Thor's hammer, Mjölnir. They will help rebuild the world.
