What Does the Magnificent Tree Frog Look Like?
The magnificent tree frog is quite a large tree frog. Male frogs can grow up to 10.4 cm (4.1 in) long, and females can reach 10.6 cm (4.2 in). Their backs are usually olive green to bright green, while their bellies are white. The undersides of their feet and legs are a bright yellow color.
Many of these frogs have white or yellow dots on their backs. These dots can be thick or spread out. Older magnificent tree frogs have very large glands called parotoid glands. These glands cover the entire top of their heads and hang down over their ears. The frog's ear, called the tympanum, is large, almost the same size as its eye. It is partly hidden by these big glands.
Where Do Magnificent Tree Frogs Live and What Do They Do?
Magnificent tree frogs are found in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. During the day, they often hide inside caves and cracks in rocks. Like other large tree frogs in Australia, such as White's tree frog and the giant tree frog, they can live close to people. You might find them around buildings, in toilets, showers, or even in water tanks.
These frogs are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They hunt for food and also breed when it's dark.
Reproduction
Magnificent tree frogs likely breed during the wet season in Australia. The male frog's call sounds a lot like the White's tree frog. It is a deep "crawk-crawk-crawk" sound that they repeat many times. Scientists have not studied the breeding habits of the magnificent tree frog in great detail yet.
As a Pet
People sometimes keep the magnificent tree frog as a pet. In Australia, you need a special permit to keep this animal in captivity.
