Maida is a small place in northern North Dakota, United States. It is also known as Seven Lakes. Maida is an unincorporated community, which means it's a settlement that isn't officially part of a city or town. It is located in Cavalier County, north of Langdon.

Maida is about 1,562 feet (476 meters) above sea level. It is an important port of entry between the United States and Canada. This means it's a place where people and goods can officially cross the border.

What's in a Name? The Story of Maida

The name "Maida" has a few interesting possible origins. People have suggested different ideas for how the community got its name:

  • It might have come from a book that Charles Howatt, the first postmaster, was reading.
  • Two Canadian bankers might have suggested the name. They got the idea from a dog in a novel written by Sir Walter Scott.
  • Another idea is that "Maida" is a shorter version of "maiden." This could refer to a haymeadow, which is a field where hay is grown.

Maida's Post Office History

The post office in Maida first opened in September 1884. This was a very important service for the people living there. In April 1967, the Maida post office became a Rural Branch of Langdon. Even though it changed, the community still has its own ZIP code, which is 58255. The Maida post office has since closed down.

A Community Hub: Jack's Bar

For many years, Maida was a lively place, especially on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. This was because of a popular spot called Jack's Bar. Even though only a few people lived in Maida, hundreds would sometimes gather there. Jack's Bar was open for 46 years. It closed in 2010 to make way for a new border crossing facility. Today, the community that was once busy has only two residents.
