Maiden Rock

Maiden Rock is a small village in Pierce County, Wisconsin, United States. It's a quiet place with a population of 119 people, according to the 2010 census. The village is part of the larger Town of Maiden Rock.

The Story Behind the Name

This village gets its name from a tall cliff, also called "Maiden Rock," located just south of the village. There's a famous legend about this cliff. It tells the story of Winona, the daughter of a Dakota Sioux chief named Red Wing. The nearby town of Red Wing, Minnesota, is named after him.

The legend says that Winona fell in love with a warrior from the rival Chippewa tribe. Her father, Chief Red Wing, did not approve and had her lover killed. Heartbroken, Winona bravely jumped from the cliff. Today, a special plaque stands near the base of the cliff. It helps everyone remember the legend and why the village has its unique name.
