The Story Behind the Name
This village gets its name from a tall cliff, also called "Maiden Rock," located just south of the village. There's a famous legend about this cliff. It tells the story of Winona, the daughter of a Dakota Sioux chief named Red Wing. The nearby town of Red Wing, Minnesota, is named after him.
The legend says that Winona fell in love with a warrior from the rival Chippewa tribe. Her father, Chief Red Wing, did not approve and had her lover killed. Heartbroken, Winona bravely jumped from the cliff. Today, a special plaque stands near the base of the cliff. It helps everyone remember the legend and why the village has its unique name.
