Makoto Kakegawa's Football Journey
Makoto Kakegawa was born in Kumagaya, Saitama, Japan, on May 23, 1973. He grew up loving football and decided to pursue it as a career. After finishing his studies at Tokai University, he joined his first professional team.
Starting His Career at Bellmare Hiratsuka
In 1996, Makoto Kakegawa joined Bellmare Hiratsuka, a team in the J1 League. At first, he didn't play many games because another talented goalkeeper, Nobuyuki Kojima, was usually the starter.
However, in 1997, Makoto got more chances to play. He appeared in 9 matches when Kojima was away playing for the Japanese national team. By 1999, after Kojima left the club, Makoto competed for the starting spot and played in 10 games. Unfortunately, that year, Bellmare Hiratsuka finished last in the league and moved down to the J2 League.
Moving to Vissel Kobe
In 2000, Makoto Kakegawa moved to Vissel Kobe, another J1 League team. In his first year there, he didn't play much, similar to his start at Bellmare Hiratsuka. But in 2001, he became the main goalkeeper for Vissel Kobe. He played regularly for the team for several years.
Even with Makoto's skills, Vissel Kobe faced challenges. In 2005, the team finished last in the J1 League, just like his previous club, and was also moved down to the J2 League.
Final Years at Shimizu S-Pulse
Makoto Kakegawa joined Shimizu S-Pulse in 2006. This was his last team before retiring. During his time at Shimizu S-Pulse, he didn't get to play in many matches. Other goalkeepers, like Yohei Nishibe and Kaito Yamamoto, were often chosen to play instead. Makoto Kakegawa decided to retire from professional football at the end of the 2009 season.
Career Statistics Summary
Throughout his career, Makoto Kakegawa played in 147 league matches. He was a dedicated goalkeeper who played for three different J1 League clubs.
