Makoto Sunakawa (砂川 誠, Sunakawa Makoto, born August 10, 1977) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a Midfielder. Sunakawa is known for his long career, especially with Consadole Sapporo.

Makoto Sunakawa's Football Journey
Makoto Sunakawa was born in Narashino, Japan, on August 10, 1977. After finishing high school, he started his professional football career. In 1996, he joined his hometown club, Kashiwa Reysol.
Early Career at Kashiwa Reysol
Sunakawa made his first appearance in the J.League Cup on June 1, 1996. This was against Urawa Reds. For the first few years, he did not play many games. However, starting in 1999, he began to play more often. He became an important player in the midfield.
In 1999, his team, Kashiwa Reysol, won the 1999 J.League Cup. This was a big achievement for the club. They also finished in third place in the J1 League in both 1999 and 2000. By 2002, Sunakawa's playing time started to decrease.
Time with Consadole Sapporo
In 2003, Sunakawa moved to Consadole Sapporo. This club had just moved down to the J2 League. He quickly became a regular player for them. He played as an offensive midfielder, helping his team attack.
In 2007, Consadole Sapporo won the J2 League championship. This meant they were promoted back to the top league, the J1 League. However, in 2008, the team finished last in J1 and went back down to J2 after just one year.
From 2009, Sunakawa faced more competition for his spot. Younger players like Seiya Fujita and Hiroki Miyazawa also played in his position. Still, he continued to play in many matches for the club.

Final Season and Retirement
In 2015, Sunakawa faced an injury that kept him from playing any matches for Consadole Sapporo. In July 2015, he moved to FC Gifu, another team in the J2 League. He played 10 games for FC Gifu before deciding to retire at the end of the 2015 season.
Makoto Sunakawa played a total of 495 league games in his career. He scored 41 goals. He is remembered for his dedication and long service to Japanese football, especially with Consadole Sapporo.
