Maksim Perfilyev facts for kids
Maksim Perfilyev (Russian: Максим Перфильев) was a brave Cossack explorer. He was born in 1580 and died in 1638. Maksim Perfilyev explored Eastern Siberia and was the first Russian to reach a region called Transbaikalia. He was also known for being very good at talking with different groups of people. These included the Evenks, Mongols, and Chinese.

Early Explorations and Forts
In 1618 and 1619, Maksim Perfilyev helped to build the Yeniseysky ostrog. An ostrog was a type of wooden fort. This fort was the first Russian fort in the middle part of the huge Siberian Yenisey River. It became an important starting point for many trips further east.
Between 1618 and 1627, Perfilyev traveled a lot on the Angara and Ilim rivers. During these journeys, he built several new forts. In 1631, he founded the Bratsky ostrog, which is now the modern city of Bratsk.
Reaching Transbaikalia
In 1639 and 1640, Maksim Perfilyev sailed up the Vitim River. He went as far as a place called Tsipa. By doing this, he became the first Russian to enter Transbaikalia. At that time, this area was known as Dauria.
Places Named After Him
Maksim Perfilyev's name lives on in several places. The village of Maksimovschina is named after him. This village is on the banks of the Irkut River, where he used to have his hunting lands.
Maksimikha Bay on Lake Baikal is also named after him. This bay is part of the larger Barguzin Bay. There is also Cape Maksimin in that bay and a nearby village called Maksimikha. Maksim Perfilyev was the first person to settle in Maksimikha. He lived there with his wife, who was from the Buryat people.
His Son, Ivan Perfilyev
Maksim Perfilyev's son, Ivan Maksimovich Perfilyev, also became famous. He was a voevoda (a military leader or governor) and a skilled diplomat in Siberia, just like his father.
