The Malacothamnus jonesii is a special kind of flowering plant. People often call it Jones' bushmallow or slender bushmallow. It belongs to the mallow family, just like cotton and hibiscus plants!
What Does It Look Like?
This plant is a tall bush that stands upright. It can grow to be two meters (about 6.5 feet) or even taller. That's taller than most people! It has thin branches that spread out.
The entire plant is covered in soft, white hairs. These hairs are so thick that the plant feels like fuzzy felt. Its leaves are a grayish-green color and are a few centimeters long.
When it blooms, the Malacothamnus jonesii has pretty pale pink flowers. These flowers grow in loose groups. Each flower has narrow petals that are less than a centimeter long.
Where Does It Grow?
The Jones' bushmallow is a unique plant because it is only found in California. This means you won't find it growing naturally anywhere else in the world!
It likes to live in dry, shrubby areas called chaparral. It also grows in woodlands. You can find it in the California Coast Ranges, which are mountains along the coast of California. Specifically, it grows in Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties.
