A Look Back: Malakoff's History

Before it was called Malakoff, this community had other names like "Caney Creek" and "Mitcham Chapel." In 1854, people wanted to open a post office. They tried to use "Purdam" or "Mitcham" as names, but those were already taken. So, they chose "Malakoff" instead.

In the 1920s, digging for coal became a very important activity in the area. This helped the town grow.

The Malakoff Man

In the 1930s, something very interesting was found near Malakoff. It was a large, ancient carved head, now known as the "Malakoff Man." This carving looks a lot like the art made by the Olmec culture. The Olmec were an ancient civilization in Mexico, famous for their giant stone heads.

Malakoff's Location and Surroundings

Malakoff is located in the western part of Henderson County. A main road, Texas State Highway 31, goes right through the middle of the city. If you go east on this highway, you'll reach Athens in about 9 miles. If you head west, you'll get to Corsicana in about 27 miles.

Another important road, Texas State Highway 198, goes north from Malakoff. It leads to Mabank, which is about 17 miles away.

Size and Water

The city of Malakoff covers a total area of about 7.5 square kilometers (2.89 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a small part, about 0.04 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), being water.

Malakoff is located about 3 miles south of the large Cedar Creek Reservoir. The city is also part of the Trinity River watershed, which means that water from this area eventually flows into the Trinity River.
