Malden is a small community in Kanawha County, West Virginia. It's part of the larger Charleston metro area. Malden was originally known as Kanawha Salines. Even though it's not a city, it has a rich history and some important landmarks.

Malden's Early Days

Malden has an interesting past! It was first called Kanawha Salines. A post office opened there in 1814. This post office helped people send and receive mail. Later, in 1879, the community changed its name to Malden. A new post office opened under this name. It's thought that Malden got its name from a town called Malden, Massachusetts.

What to See in Malden

Malden is home to the historic Salines salt wells. These wells were important for getting salt from the ground long ago. You can also find the Booker T. Washington Park here. This park is owned and taken care of by West Virginia State University.

Two important places in Malden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special and protected because of their history. These places are the African Zion Baptist Church and the Malden Historic District.

Famous People from Malden

Many notable people have come from Malden. These include General Lewis Ruffner and his wife Viola Ruffner. Another very famous person from Malden was Booker T. Washington. He was the president of the Tuskegee Institute. Booker T. Washington was also a very important African-American leader in the early 1900s.
