Malletts Creek is a small stream located in Washtenaw County, Michigan. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one, the Huron River. A large part of the land around Malletts Creek is covered by cities and towns.

Because of this, a lot of the ground in the creek's area, about 40%, is covered with hard surfaces like roads and buildings. These surfaces don't let rainwater soak into the ground. Instead, the water rushes into the creek, carrying pollution and causing problems. This means Malletts Creek isn't very healthy. Groups like the "Adopt-A-Stream" program regularly check its water quality, and their tests often show it needs help.

Malletts Creek's Journey

Malletts Creek is mostly found within the city of Ann Arbor. However, the area of land that drains into the creek, called its watershed, is about 11 square miles. This watershed also includes parts of northern Pittsfield Township and tiny bits of other nearby townships like Ann Arbor, Superior, Lodi, and Scio. Eventually, Malletts Creek flows into a spot called South Pond, which is a side channel of the Huron River.

Helping Malletts Creek

Many groups are working together to make Malletts Creek healthier. Washtenaw County is leading these efforts, partnering with Ann Arbor, Pittsfield Township, the Huron River Watershed Council, and others. They are creating plans to improve the water quality of the creek.

Restoration Efforts

By May 2014, some important work had already been finished. These projects included:

  • Making the creek's banks stronger to stop erosion.
  • Creating natural areas like prairie land and riparian wetland habitats. These special areas are built along different parts of the main creek and a smaller stream that flows through County Farm Park. They help filter water and provide homes for wildlife.
