Many people believe the name "Scio" comes from the Greek island of Chios. This was around the time the United States started to have friendly relations with the new country of Greece. Greece had just won its independence in the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830).
Some people also thought "Scio" might come from the Latin phrase "I know." However, the connection to the Greek island is the most likely reason.
