The Malta Boat Club is a special place for people who love rowing. It's located at #9 Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This club is for amateur rowers, meaning they row for fun and competition, not as paid professionals.
The club started way back in 1860. In 1865, it moved to the Schuylkill River and joined the Schuylkill Navy. The Schuylkill Navy is a group of rowing clubs in Philadelphia. Before moving, the club was on the Delaware River and kept a boat called the "Minnehaha". The club was founded by members of a group called the Minnehaha Lodge of the Sons of Malta.
The Malta Boathouse
The building where the Malta Boat Club is located has a cool history. In 1873, the Malta Boat Club worked with the Vesper Boat Club to build a boathouse. It was one and a half stories tall.
Later, in 1880, they made the boathouse bigger. Then, in 1901, two brothers named George W. and William D. Hewitt designed even more additions. They added a third story, making Malta's boathouse the tallest one on Boathouse Row. The Hewitt brothers were famous architects who designed other important buildings in Philadelphia.
