Malted milk, also called malt powder, is a special powder. It's made from a mix of malted barley, wheat flour, and dried milk. People use this powder to give a unique flavor to drinks and foods. It's also used in baking to help dough cook just right.
The Story of Malted Milk
The idea for malted milk came from a pharmacist named James Horlick in London, England. He wanted to create a healthy food supplement for babies. James moved to the United States to join his brother, William Horlick, in Wisconsin.
In 1873, the Horlick brothers started a company called J & W Horlicks. They made their baby food in Chicago. Ten years later, they got a patent for a new recipe that included dried milk. At first, they called their product "Diastoid." But in 1887, they gave it the name "malted milk."
Malted milk was first made for babies and sick people. But it soon became popular for other reasons. Explorers loved it because it was light, didn't spoil, and was very nutritious. They took malted milk on their long trips around the world. William Horlick even helped fund trips to Antarctica. A mountain range there, the Horlick Mountains, is named after him!
Back in the US, people started drinking Horlick's new beverage just for fun. James Horlick went back to England to sell his American-made product there. Malted milk became a common item at soda shops. It became even more popular when mixed with ice cream to make a "malt." Many soda shops were even called "malt shops" because of this drink.
What Malted Milk is Used For
Malted milk is used in many different foods and drinks:

- Malted milkshakes are popular sweet drinks.
- Malted soyabean milk is a plant-based drink.
- Malted hot drinks like Horlicks and Ovaltine are warm and comforting.
- Malted milk balls are a type of candy. Famous ones include Whoppers, Mighty Malts, and Maltesers.
- Malted milk is also used in some bagel recipes. It helps the dough bake well.
