Mamamoo (Hangul: 마마무), often called MAMAMOO, is a popular South Korean girl group. They were formed by RBW entertainment in 2014. The group officially started their music journey on June 18, 2014, with their song "Mr. Ambiguous." The name "Mamamoo" sounds like a baby's first babbles. It means coming close to music in a natural and simple way, just like a baby. Many music critics thought their debut was one of the best in K-pop that year. Mamamoo is known for their unique style, which often includes retro, jazz, and R&B sounds. They are also famous for their powerful singing voices.

Mamamoo's Musical Journey

Starting Out: 2014–2015

Before their official debut, Mamamoo worked with several other artists. Their first song together was "Don't Be Happy" with Bumkey in January 2014. They also released "Peppermint Chocolate" with K.Will and Wheesung, which quickly became popular. In May 2014, they released "HeeHeeHaHeHo" with the rap group Geeks.

The group officially debuted on June 18, 2014, with their first mini-album, Hello. The main song was "Mr. Ambiguous." The music video for this song featured many famous K-pop stars, which helped them get noticed. Mamamoo performed live for the first time on the M Countdown TV show. Later that year, they released a song called "Love Lane" for the TV show Marriage, Not Dating.

In November 2014, Mamamoo released their second mini-album, Piano Man. The title song reached number 41 on the Gaon Digital Chart. By the end of 2014, Mamamoo was one of the top girl groups in South Korea for digital music sales.

In April 2015, Mamamoo released "Ahh Oop!" This was the first song from their third mini-album, Pink Funky. It was their second time working with singer Esna. In June 2015, Mamamoo traveled to Mongolia to perform at a special concert. This event celebrated 25 years of friendship between South Korea and Mongolia.

On June 19, 2015, they released Pink Funky and its main song, "Um Oh Ah Yeh." This song was a big hit, reaching number three on the Gaon Chart. It was their first song to make it into the top three. After their promotions, Mamamoo held their first fan meeting called "1st Moo Party." Tickets sold out in just one minute, so they added another show for more fans. They even held a "Moo Party" in Los Angeles, USA.

Mamamoo also appeared on the TV show Immortal Songs 2 several times. In October 2015, they won their first competition on the show with their performance of "Backwood's Mountain."

Rising to Fame: 2016–2017

In January 2016, Mamamoo announced their first solo concert, 2016 Mamamoo Concert-Moosical. All 7,000 tickets for the concert sold out in just one minute!

Mamamoo released their first full-length album, Melting, in February 2016. They pre-released two songs, "I Miss You" and "1cm/Taller than You," before the album came out. The album's main song, "You're the Best (넌 is 뭔들)," became their first song to reach number one on the charts.

On March 6, 2016, they won their first music show award for "You're the Best" on Inkigayo. They went on to win eight awards in total for the song. Mamamoo also performed in Austin, Texas, at the South By Southwest festival's K-Pop Night Out.

In August 2016, Mamamoo released two new songs, "Angel" and "Dab Dab." These songs featured the members split into two groups: the singers (Solar and Wheein) and the rappers (Moonbyul and Hwasa). In September, they released another song called "New York." After this, Mamamoo announced their fourth mini-album, Memory, with the main song "Décalcomanie." They also sang a song called "Love" for the popular TV show Goblin.

In January 2017, Mamamoo announced their second solo concert series, 2017 Mamamoo Concert Moosical: Curtain Call. During one of their concerts, a video was shown where the members dressed up as Bruno Mars. They later apologized for this, explaining that they learned a lot about how their actions could affect international fans. They promised to be more careful in the future.

Mamamoo released their fifth mini-album, Purple, in June 2017. The main song was "Yes I Am." This song quickly became number one on the Melon music chart. Mamamoo set a record for the most unique listeners for a girl group on Melon in 24 hours with "Yes I Am." They won several music show awards for this song and also reached number one on Billboard's World Album Charts.

New Projects and Solo Work: 2018–Present

In January 2018, Mamamoo started a new project called "Four Seasons." The idea was to release four albums, each representing a season, a color, and a member's unique style. They wanted to show how much they had grown as artists.

The first album in the "Four Seasons" project was their sixth mini-album, Yellow Flower, released in March 2018. Its main song was "Starry Night." This song became very popular and was one of the top 10 songs on the Gaon Digital Chart for the first half of the year.

In August 2018, Mamamoo held their third solo concert, 2018 Mamamoo Concert 4Seasons S/S. Tickets for this concert also sold out in just two minutes!

Mamamoo continued their "Four Seasons" project with their seventh mini-album, Red Moon, in July 2018. The main song was "Egotistic." This album was very successful, reaching number four on the Billboard World Albums chart in the U.S. It also reached number three on the Gaon Album Chart in Korea.

In October 2018, Mamamoo released their first Japanese song, "Décalcomanie." It reached number 11 on Japan's Oricon weekly single chart.

In November 2018, they released the third part of their "Four Seasons" project, Blue;s, their eighth mini-album. The main song was "Wind Flower."

Mamamoo released their ninth mini-album, White Wind, in March 2019. This was the final part of their "Four Seasons" project. The main song was "Gogobebe." White Wind reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart. "Gogobebe" was also a big hit, reaching number five on the Gaon Digital Chart.

In March 2019, Mamamoo announced their fourth solo concert, “2019 Mamamoo Concert 4Seasons F/W.” These concerts were the grand finale for their "Four Seasons Four Colors Project."

In July 2019, Mamamoo released a new song called "Gleam." It was used in a commercial for Davich Eyeglasses.

Mamamoo released their second full album, Reality in Black, in November 2019. Its main song was "Hip." Reality in Black reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart. "Hip" also became their first song to reach number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sales chart.

In February 2020, Mamamoo released their third Japanese song, "Shampoo." This song was included in the Japanese version of Reality in Black.

After Solar released her solo song, "Spit It Out," in April 2020, Mamamoo became only the second K-pop group where every member had a solo song appear on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart.

In October 2020, Mamamoo announced their tenth mini-album, Travel. They pre-released the song "Dingga" (딩가딩가) before the album came out. "Dingga" was very popular, reaching high spots on various music charts. The full album and its second main song, "Aya," were released in November 2020.
