Early Life and Education
Moon Byul-yi was born in Bucheon, South Korea, on December 22, 1992. When she was in middle school, she became very interested in singing. This happened after she saw the group TVXQ perform their song "Rising Sun." She decided to become a singer after getting good feedback from a school performance.
She also looked up to Girls' Generation and their leader Taeyeon. Moonbyul even went to SM Entertainment's academy to follow her dreams. She finished high school at Wonmi High School. Later, she studied media music and vocals at the Paekche Institute of the Arts.
Her Name and Its Meaning
Moonbyul's stage name combines her family name "Moon" with her given name "Byul-yi." Her given name "Byul-yi" means star in Korean. Moonbyul has shared that her father chose the name "Byul-yi" because he was inspired by the night she was born.
She also uses the nickname "Moonstar" when she raps. This name directly translates the meaning of her Korean name into English. Since she started her career, Moonbyul has used "Moonstar" in many of her song lyrics. The moon and stars are often linked to her as well.
Her Music Career
Starting with Mamamoo
Moonbyul joined her music company, RBW, in 2011. She first passed her audition as a singer and trained to be one. However, her producer suggested she become a rapper instead. The group needed a rapper, and Moonbyul agreed to switch. Even though she was new to rapping, she debuted with Mamamoo on June 19, 2014.
She became the main rapper and performer for Mamamoo. The group debuted with their song "Mr. Ambiguous." Mamamoo quickly became known for their strong singing style. Moonbyul also helped create the dance moves for their first song. She was good at freestyle and hip-hop dancing. She would even make up her own dance routines for monthly evaluations.
Mamamoo's Success: 2014–2017
Moonbyul debuted with Mamamoo on June 19, 2014. They released their first mini-album, Hello. Since their second mini-album, Piano Man, Moonbyul has helped write many of Mamamoo's main songs. She writes all of her own rap parts.
In November 2016, Mamamoo performed at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. This is a very important film awards show in South Korea. They performed their song "Decalcomanie" with a fun twist. They added lines from famous movies. Moonbyul's line, "Jung Woo-sung, if I drink this in one shot, will you go out with me?", became very popular. This moment went viral and helped their song become a big hit.
In June 2017, Moonbyul released her first solo song, "Love & Hate." This song was part of Mamamoo's fifth mini-album, Purple. She wrote the song about a past relationship. It talks about feeling lonely even when someone is there.
Solo Music and Hosting: 2018–2021

In July 2020, Moonbyul became a host for a radio show called Avengirls. Because she was so good, she started her own talk show, Studio Moon Night, on February 15, 2021. She was the first Mamamoo member to host her own show. She even wrote the theme song for it. Studio Moon Night was very popular and continued for a second season. In May 2022, Moonbyul won an award for her work as a host.
