Life and Career
Mamat Khalid was born in Ipoh, Perak. When he was a young boy, he loved going to the cinema almost every day to watch the newest movies. Even though his father wasn't happy about this hobby, Mamat's love for films never faded.
Before he started making films, Mamat worked in a government office. He was also a big fan of rock music. In 1986, he played the keyboard in an amateur band called Drop Out. His experiences from this time inspired him to write and direct his 2005 film, Rock. This movie was very successful and led to three more sequels: Rock Ooo…! (2013), Rock Bro! (2016), and Rock 4: Rockers Never Dai (2020).
Mamat looked up to the famous director P. Ramlee as one of his biggest heroes in filmmaking.
Family Life
Mamat Khalid married Hasmah Hassan on April 12, 1987, just a few days after his 24th birthday. They had five children together: three sons and two daughters. One of his sons, Amen Khalid, has also followed in his father's footsteps in the film industry.
Later Life and Passing
In April 2017, Mamat Khalid was admitted to the hospital because he had trouble breathing. Doctors monitored him due to high blood pressure, but he was in stable condition.
Sadly, Mamat Khalid passed away on October 24, 2021, at the age of 58. He died from heart disease at Slim River Hospital. He had collapsed at his Sarang Art Hub restaurant earlier that day. Mamat was buried at the Masjid Paloh Muslim Cemetery in Ipoh.
