Exploring the District
The Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District is made up of two very different parts. Each part tells a unique story about Yellowstone National Park.
Fort Yellowstone: A Military Past
Fort Yellowstone is a well-organized area with strong buildings. These buildings clearly show their military history. The United States Army managed Yellowstone National Park from 1886 until 1918. After that, the National Park Service took over.
Today, the park's main office is in what used to be the double cavalry barracks. These barracks were built in 1909. The Horace Albright Visitor Center is also in an old military building. It was once the bachelors' officers quarters, also built in 1909.
The Visitor Area: Fun and Services
The visitor area is quite different from the military part. It has a more relaxed feel and layout. Here, you'll find the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Dining Room. There's also a gas station and several stores for visitors.
The Yellowstone Main Post Office is located just north of Fort Yellowstone. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The residential part of the district includes houses designed by a famous architect named Robert Reamer.
Location and Surroundings
The district is right next to the amazing Mammoth Hot Springs thermal area. The buildings themselves are built on an ancient travertine terrace. The Grand Loop Road Historic District passes through Mammoth. The North Entrance Road Historic District is also very close by, just to the north.
