The Mamoré River is a very large river found in Bolivia and Brazil. It joins with the Beni River to create the Madeira River. The Madeira River is one of the biggest rivers that flows into the mighty Amazon River.
The Mamoré River starts high up on the northern side of the Sierra de Cochabamba mountains. This is east of the city of Cochabamba in Bolivia. At its beginning, it is known as the Chimoré River until it meets the Chapare River.

Journey of the Mamoré River
The Mamoré River flows through different landscapes. It collects water from many smaller rivers along its path. Its journey helps shape the land around it.
Main Rivers Joining the Mamoré
Many rivers flow into the Mamoré, making it bigger and stronger. These are called tributaries.
- From the west, important rivers like the Chapare River, Secure River, Apere River, and Yacuma River join the Mamoré.
- From the east, rivers such as the Ichilo River, Guapay River, Ivari River, Manique River, and Guapore River add their waters.
The Guapay River is actually very long, almost as long as the Mamoré itself. However, it is quite shallow and has many obstacles, so it doesn't carry as much water. The Guapore River is also very long and carries a lot of water. It starts in Brazil, near other rivers that flow to the Amazon and even to the Paraguay River and Paraná River.
Traveling on the River
The Mamoré River is important for travel and trade in the region. However, some parts can be tricky.
Rapids and Railways
A few miles before the Mamoré joins the Beni River, there are some fast-flowing sections called rapids. These rapids make it hard for boats to pass. To help people and goods move around these difficult spots, a railway was built. This railway is about 300 kilometers (186 miles) long and goes around the rapids of the Madeira River.
Above these rapids, the Mamoré River is easy to travel by boat all the way to Chimore. This town is at the base of the mountains. Most of the rivers that flow into the Mamoré are also good for boats for long distances.
Ancient History of the River Basin
The area around the Mamoré River has a rich history. Long ago, a large civilization lived there.
The Llanos de Moxos Civilization
An amazing ancient civilization existed in the swampy area known as the Llanos de Moxos. This area is part of the Mamoré River basin. These people built complex systems to manage water and farm the land before Europeans arrived.
