History of Manila
Manila started as a camp for herdsmen in the late 1860s. A man named John Needham set it up. By the late 1890s, a small community grew there. It was called "Cinda" after the sister of an early postmaster.
In 1901, the community officially became a city. They chose the name "Manila" to honor a big naval victory. This was when Commodore George Dewey won the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898. This battle happened during the Spanish–American War.
Railroad and Museum
In the early 1900s, a train line reached Manila. This was the Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad. Later, it became part of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. In 1910, the Manila Depot was built. This old train station is now a museum. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.
Herman Davis Memorial
In 1925, a special memorial was built in Manila for Herman Davis. He was a local hero from World War I. In 1953, this memorial became a state park. The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism helps take care of it.
Geography of Manila
Manila is in the northwestern part of Mississippi County. It is in a flat area of Arkansas called the Arkansas Delta. The city is located where two main roads meet: Arkansas Highway 18 and Arkansas Highway 77. It is about 9 miles (14 km) south of the border with Missouri. The city covers about 3.8 square miles (9.78 square kilometers) of land.
Natural Surroundings
Manila is part of the St. Francis Lowlands area. This region is mostly flat farmland today. It also has sandy areas and sunken lands from big earthquakes that happened in 1811–1812. Many natural waterways here have been changed to straight channels. This has caused some loss of homes for water animals and plants. The Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge is just east of Manila. This refuge protects some of the original forests that used to cover this area.
