History of Mannsville
Early Settlement and Growth
People first started settling in the Mannsville area around 1801. The community officially became a village in 1879. A big fire in 1885 destroyed several buildings, but the people quickly rebuilt them.
Community Buildings and Services
In the 1830s, missionaries began serving the area. The Mannsville Methodist-Episcopal Church was started in 1847. Its main building was built in 1859, and a house for the pastor was added in 1880. Later, a large addition was built in 1957, and the church was updated in 1967. A new steeple was put up in 2002.
Schools in Mannsville
The first school in Mannsville was a small red schoolhouse built in 1826. A larger two-story school was built later but burned down in 1878. Another school built on the same spot also burned down in 1883. A new building was opened that same year, teaching 106 students. This school also burned down in 1907.
The current school building, now known as the Mannsville Manor Elementary School, was finished in 1908. It was built with special cement blocks that looked like stone. In 1930, the school district joined with other districts nearby to form a larger school system.
Emergency Services
In the early 1930s, six men started the Mannsville Volunteer Fire Department. They each put in one dollar to get it going! In 1949, they joined with the fire department from Pierrepont Manor to create the Mannsville Manor Fire Department. They were sometimes jokingly called the "Cellar Savers."
In 1960, seven members of the fire department borrowed $200 to start the first ambulance service in southern Jefferson County. This service, called Rescue 48, covered six townships. By 1976, Rescue 48 had 25 members providing ambulance service 24 hours a day. In 1991, it became one of the first volunteer paramedic ambulance services in the county.
The Pierrepont Manor Complex, a group of historic buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
Geography of Mannsville
Mannsville is located in the southern part of Jefferson County. It covers about 2.4 square kilometers (0.93 square miles), with most of that being land. A creek called Skinner Creek runs through the village. Early settlers used the water power from this creek.
