Mannsville is a small community in New York, United States. It's located in Albany County, within the larger Town of Colonie. Mannsville is sometimes called a "hamlet," which is a small settlement, even smaller than a village.
This area is west of the City of Watervliet. It's a bit cut off from the rest of Colonie. You actually have to drive through Watervliet to get to other parts of Colonie from Mannsville. In 1987, a local historian said Mannsville was no longer an "official hamlet." However, it's still listed as an unincorporated community in the Town of Colonie.

Mannsville's Past: A Brief History
Mannsville has an interesting story that goes back to the late 1800s.
How Mannsville Got Its Name
In 1875, a man named Francis N. Mann bought most of the land that is now Mannsville. He was a judge in the nearby Town of Watervliet. Sadly, he passed away just a few months later. His children, Francis N. Mann Jr., Elias P. Mann, and Emily Mann, inherited the land.
The Land's Journey and New Homes
In 1905, the Mann children moved to England. They didn't sell the land or arrange for the property taxes to be paid. Because of this, Albany County eventually took ownership of the land. They then sold it off in smaller pieces at an auction. This led to many new houses being built in Mannsville during the 1970s.
A Community's Choice: Staying or Joining?
In 1998, the nearby City of Watervliet tried to make Mannsville part of its city. At that time, about 175 people lived in Mannsville. Leaders from both Colonie and Watervliet explained why Mannsville should or shouldn't join Watervliet.
- Why stay with Colonie? The Town Supervisor of Colonie, Mary Brizzell, said that staying with Colonie meant lower taxes for residents. They would also have access to the town's golf course, youth services, and money for community projects.
- Why join Watervliet? Watervliet's Mayor, Robert Carlson, pointed out that emergency services like fire trucks would arrive faster. Watervliet also picked up garbage for free and didn't charge a special fire tax, which Colonie did. Plus, children from Mannsville already went to schools in the Watervliet City School District, and most residents went to churches in Watervliet.
Mannsville's Location and Landscape
Mannsville is a small area, about 18.5 acres in size. It's mostly flat and not very high above sea level.

Flooding Concerns
Since 1995, people living in Mannsville have often complained about flooding. This is partly because of beaver dams on a nearby stream called the Kromma Kill. Also, more houses being built uphill from Mannsville has added to the problem.]
