Mansfield is a small town, called a borough, in east-central Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in the Tioga River valley. You can find it where U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Business Route 15 meet. Mansfield is about 36 miles (58 km) southwest of Elmira, New York.

History of Mansfield
Early Settlement and Growth
In 1800, a settler from Rhode Island named Asa Mann cleared a large area of forest. In 1804, he planned out a town on this land, which became known as Mann's field. The town officially became a borough in 1857.
In the same year, the Mansfield Classical Seminary was started. This school later became a state normal school in 1862. Today, it is known as Mansfield University of Pennsylvania.
First Night Football Game
Mansfield is famous for being the place where the very first night football game was played. This historic game happened on September 28, 1892. It was played under bright electric lights, thanks to the Edison Illuminating Company.
The 1892 Wyoming Seminary vs. Mansfield State Normal football game is still celebrated today. An annual festival remembers this special event from the 1890s.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1900, about 1,847 people lived in Mansfield. By 1910, the population was 1,654. The number of people grew to 3,411 by the year 2000. In 2010, the population was 3,625.
Historic Places
The Mansfield Armory is an important building in the town. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. This means it's recognized for its historical importance.
