Manuel Domínguez Sánchez (born December 21, 1840, in Madrid; died April 15, 1906, in Cuenca) was a talented Spanish painter. He was also an illustrator. He painted in a style called Academicism. This style focused on traditional art rules. His early paintings showed some influence from the Nazarene movement. Later, his art looked more like the work of another artist, Eduardo Rosales.

A Young Artist's Journey

Manuel studied art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. His main teacher there was Federico de Madrazo. He was given a special scholarship to study in Rome, Italy. He finished his studies there in 1864. After that, he showed his paintings in many international art shows. He even won an award for his painting called "Death of Seneca." This painting is still his most famous work.

When he came back to Spain, he became a professor at the Royal Academy. In 1904, he was named an Academician there. This is a special title for important members of the Academy.

The Long Names of Paintings

Manuel Domínguez Sánchez liked to give his paintings very long, detailed names. For example, his famous "Death of Seneca" painting has a much longer title. Its full name is: "Seneca, after opening his veins, goes into a bath and his friends, filled with grief, swear eternal hatred of Nero, who decreed the death of their master."

Big Art Projects

Besides his canvas paintings, Manuel also worked on large art projects. He decorated important buildings. These included the Palacio de Santoña and the Palacio de Linares in Madrid. He also helped decorate the church at the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. There, he worked with another artist, Alejandro Ferrant. They painted three walls in the main chapel. He also painted one wall in the Chapel of Carlos III.

Painting Outdoors

From 1884 to 1890, Manuel spent his summers in Muros de Nalón. He stayed at the Artists' Colony of Muros. He went there with his friend Casto Plasencia, who started the colony. There, Manuel practiced painting landscapes outdoors. This style of painting is called en plein aire. In 1889, he was in charge of the Spanish art section at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. This was a big world's fair.

Portraits and Museums

Manuel also painted portraits of people. He painted three portraits of King Alfonso XII. These paintings are now kept in different places. One is at the Ministry of Public Works. Another is at the Universidad Central de Madrid. The third is at the Spanish Embassy in Paris. You can see many of his artworks at the famous Museo del Prado in Madrid.

The Royal Academy of Fine Arts has a statue of Manuel. It was made by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure.
