Manuel José Jimenes González (born January 14, 1808 – died December 22, 1854) was an important military leader and politician in the Dominican Republic. He became the second President of the Dominican Republic, serving from September 1848 to May 1849. Before becoming president, he was the country's Minister of War and Marine Affairs.
Early Life and Family
Manuel Jimenes was born on January 14, 1808, in Baracoa, Cuba. His parents, Juan Jimenes and Altagracia González, were Dominicans who had moved to Cuba. They had left their home because of the wars happening in Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic). These wars were part of the bigger Napoleonic Wars and involved Toussaint Louverture taking control of Santo Domingo.
During the early 1800s, many Dominicans left the island. This was due to a slave rebellion in Haiti. About 4,000 Dominicans went to Cuba, and 100,000 went to Venezuela. Others moved to Puerto Rico and Mexico. Later, many Dominicans and their children born in other countries returned to their homeland.
Political Career
When the Dominican Republic was a new country, Jimenes served as the Minister of War and Marine Matters. He worked under Pedro Santana, who was the first president.
On August 4, 1848, President Santana decided to step down. General Jimenes was then chosen to be the next president. He became the second constitutional President of the Dominican Republic.
Later that same year, Haitian forces invaded the Dominican Republic. These forces were led by Emperor Soulouque. President Jimenes found it difficult to stop the Haitian army. Because of this, he had to ask Santana for military help. Santana successfully defeated the Haitian military. However, after this victory, Santana took control of the Republic again by removing Jimenes from power.
Personal Life
Manuel Jimenes married his first wife, María Francisca Ravelo de los Reyes, on August 19, 1835. They were married in Santo Domingo. Together, they had five children: María del Carmen, Isabel Emilia, María de los Dolores, Manuel María, and Manuel de Jesús.
On May 21, 1849, Jimenes married his second wife, Altagracia Pereyra Pérez. They had a son named Juan Isidro Jimenes Pereyra. Interestingly, their son also grew up to become President of the Dominican Republic later on.
Manuel Jimenes was known for enjoying cockfighting. He passed away on December 22, 1854, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
