Early Life and Church Career
Manuel Antonio Rojo del Río y Vieyra was born in Tula, Mexico. This happened on September 24, 1708. He grew up to become a religious leader.
In 1758, he was made the Archbishop of Manila. An archbishop is a very high-ranking bishop in the Catholic Church. He leads a large area called an archdiocese.
Becoming Governor-General
On May 31, 1759, the Governor-General of the Philippines, Pedro Manuél de Arandía, passed away. This left a very important job open. Bishop Miguel Lino de Ezpeleta took over as acting Governor-General for a short time.
On July 22, 1759, Rojo del Río officially became the Archbishop of Manila. Then, in 1761, a special order came from Spain. This order said that Rojo del Río should take over from Ezpeleta. He then became the new Governor-General of the Philippines.
Time as Governor-General
As Governor-General, Rojo del Río faced a big challenge. The Seven Years' War was happening around the world. During this war, the British attacked Manila in 1762. This event is known as the capture of Manila.
Some people at the time felt that Rojo del Río was very smart. However, they also thought he was not good at military decisions. This was because military matters were not his main job or interest. This lack of military experience became a problem during the British attack.
Rojo del Río passed away while still in office. He died on January 30, 1764.
