Manuela Maria Veloso (born August 12, 1957) is a famous expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics. She leads AI Research at JPMorgan Chase, a big financial company. Before that, she was a special professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where she also led the Machine Learning Department.

Manuela Veloso has been a leader in many important groups. She was the president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) until 2014. She also helped start and was a past president of the RoboCup Federation, which organizes robot soccer competitions. She is recognized as a top expert by many important organizations like AAAI, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Her Journey in Learning

Manuela Veloso started her higher education in Lisbon, Portugal. She earned her first degrees in electrical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1980 and 1984.

After that, she moved to the United States. She studied at Boston University and received a Master of Arts degree in computer science in 1986. Then, she went to Carnegie Mellon University, a very well-known school for computer science. She earned her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in computer science there in 1992. Her Ph.D. project was about how computers can learn by using ideas from things they already know.

What She Does: Robots and AI

After finishing her Ph.D., Manuela Veloso became a professor at Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science. She moved up the ranks, becoming a full professor in 2002. She also spent time as a visiting professor at other famous universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University.

Manuela Veloso's main goal in her research is to build smart, independent robots. These robots can think, understand what's around them, and act on their own. She wants them to be able to plan, carry out tasks, and learn new things.

She and her students have created many different kinds of robots. Some of her most famous work involves teams of robot soccer players. Her robot teams have won the RoboCup world championships several times! She also developed CoBot mobile robots. These robots have traveled over 1,000 kilometers on their own inside university buildings.

Manuela Veloso believes that creating smart robots comes with a big responsibility. She is hopeful that this technology will be used to help people and make the world a better place.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Manuela Veloso has received many important awards for her work in AI and robotics. Here are some of them:

  • In 1995, she received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
  • In 1997, she was given the Allen Newell Medal for Excellence in Research.
  • She became an AAAI Fellow in 2003, which means she is recognized as a top expert in Artificial Intelligence.
  • In 2010, she became a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Also in 2010, she became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
  • In 2016, she was named an ACM Fellow. This award recognized her important work in AI, especially in planning, learning, multi-agent systems, and robotics.

Manuela Veloso is also featured in the "Notable Women in Computing" cards, which celebrate important women in computer science.
