Manwgan ap Selyf facts for kids
Manwgan ap Selyf was a King of Powys in the early 600s. He was the son of Selyf Sarffgadau. His story involves a challenge to his rule when he was young.
Manwgan's Early Reign
When Manwgan ap Selyf became king around the year 613, some historians believe he was still a young boy. This might have made his kingdom seem weak. Because of this, another ruler named Eluadd ap Glast, who was king of Dogfeiling, invaded Powys. Eluadd ap Glast is also sometimes called Eiludd Powys.
The Usurper's Rule
Eluadd ap Glast took over the throne of Powys. He ruled for a long time, possibly more than 30 years. He was eventually killed in a battle around 642, fighting against the Northumbrians. This battle might have been the Battle of Maes Cogwy, near a place now called Oswestry.
Manwgan Regains the Throne
The family of Eluadd ap Glast, known as the Dogfeiling dynasty, was finally defeated by the Saxons around the year 656. After this, Manwgan ap Selyf was able to return and take his rightful place as King of Powys.
Historical Records
It's a bit confusing to know exactly who Eiludd was. Some old writings, like one from Jesus College, Oxford, say that Eiludd was Manwgan's brother and Selyf's son. But another old document, found in the British Library, says Eiludd was Manwgan's uncle and Selyf's brother. Historians study these old texts to try and understand the past.
