Maple Mountain is a mountain located in Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It stands about 642 meters (2,106 feet) above sea level. This mountain is quite special because it rises much higher above the land around it than many other peaks.

Even though it's not the very highest point in Ontario (that's Ishpatina Ridge), Maple Mountain looks more impressive. It rises 37 meters (121 feet) higher than Ishpatina Ridge does over Scarecrow Lake. Maple Mountain is well-known for rising above Tupper Lake. It also has an old 100-foot fire tower that many hikers like to visit. A 3.2-kilometer (2-mile) hiking trail leads to this abandoned tower.

Getting to Maple Mountain

Maple Mountain is in the Timiskaming District of Northeastern Ontario. It's not easy to get to because it's in a very remote area. The roads and trails there can be hard to use, especially when the weather is bad.

The most popular ways to reach Maple Mountain are by canoe or by float plane. These methods help people get to this beautiful but distant mountain.

Maple Mountain's Special Meaning

The local Temagami First Nation people have a special name for Maple Mountain: Chee-bay-jing. This name means "the place where the spirits go." They consider the mountain a very important and sacred site.

The English name, Maple Mountain, was given by Dr. Robert Bell in 1888. He was part of the Geological Survey of Canada. Dr. Bell was also the first non-Indigenous person known to climb the mountain.
