Long ago, an indigenous woman fell in love with a Spaniard. But sadly, their love story never truly began. The legend says that this woman was enchanted, and now she visits the waterfall at night. She comes to comb her long hair by the water. If you happen to be there at midnight, the legend says she might speak to you. She might even give you a special talisman to help with unrequited love.
Marías' History
Marías has a long and interesting history, just like the rest of Puerto Rico. It has seen many changes over the years.
Becoming Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but not a state.
In 1899, the United States counted the people living in Puerto Rico. The count showed that Marías and another barrio called Quebrada Larga together had 923 people. Over the years, the population of Marías has changed. For example, in 1980, about 4,855 people lived there. By 2010, the population was 4,658.
