Marías is a special part of Aguada, Puerto Rico, a town in Puerto Rico. It's called a "barrio," which is like a neighborhood or district. In 2010, about 1,997 people lived here.

A Glimpse into Marías's Past

After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.

In 1899, the United States Department of War counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 746 people lived in Marías barrio at that time.

Earthquakes and Safety

Puerto Rico experienced a series of earthquakes from 2019 to 2020. During these events, some people in Marías and nearby barrios like Cerro Gordo and Atalaya had to leave their homes because of damage.

The Lydia Meléndez School in Asomante barrio became a safe place for these residents. It served as a refuge, offering shelter to those whose homes were affected by the earthquakes.
