Marananga is a small place, or locality, in South Australia. It's known for its beautiful scenery. Before 1918, Marananga had a different name: Gnadenfrei.
The name was changed during a time when many Australian places with German-sounding names were given new names. This happened because of a big war. The original name, Gnadenfrei, means 'grace' and 'freedom'. The new name, Marananga, comes from an Aboriginal language. It means "My hands."
A church called Gnadenfrei Lutheran Church was built here a long time ago. Later, in 1879, a German school was also started. In 1918, the school's name was changed to Marananga. This is how the area got its current name.
