Early Life and College Basketball
Marc Jackson grew up in North Philadelphia. He went to Roman Catholic High School. In 1993, he helped his team win the Catholic League championship. He averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks per game. He also won the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. During this tournament, he was a strong player in the middle. His team even beat DeMatha in the final game. His great playing earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
After high school, Marc went to Virginia Commonwealth University for one year. Then, he moved to Temple University. Temple was very close to his childhood home in Philadelphia. He took a year off from playing (called a redshirt year). After that, he played for two seasons with the Temple Owls. Marc was the top scorer and rebounder for his team in both seasons. He helped them win 40 games and lose only 14. They also made it to the NCAA Tournament both years. Marc decided to leave college early to join the NBA draft.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting in Europe
The Golden State Warriors picked Marc Jackson in the second round of the 1997 NBA draft. He was the 37th player chosen overall. Since he was picked in the second round, Marc decided to start his career in Europe. This allowed him to earn more money to support his mother and younger brother. It also helped him improve his basketball skills. He played overseas for three years. He played for Tofaş Bursa in Turkey and for Lobos Caja Cantabria and Cantabria Lobos in Spain. In 2000, he returned to the U.S. and joined the Warriors.
Playing in the NBA
Marc quickly made a big impact with the Golden State Warriors. He led all new players (rookies) in points and rebounds. He was also among the best in shooting and free throw percentages. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie team. He finished third in the voting for Rookie of the Year. After his first season, Marc signed a big contract offer with the Houston Rockets. The Warriors decided to match this offer, which meant he stayed with them. Even though he was successful, Marc was behind other players like Adonal Foyle and Erick Dampier on the Warriors' team. He was not happy that the Warriors matched the offer because he wanted more playing time elsewhere.
In 2002, the Warriors traded Marc to the Minnesota Timberwolves. There, he played alongside star player Kevin Garnett. On July 23, 2003, he was traded to his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. He missed 57 games in his first season in Philadelphia due to an injury. However, he played much better the next year. He led the team in rebounds and was second in points. This helped the Sixers make it back to the playoffs. While playing for Philadelphia, he played both as a center and a power forward.
On August 9, 2005, Marc was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Later, before the end of the 2005–06 season, the Nets traded him to the New Orleans Hornets. In 2007, he signed with the Greek team Olympiacos. However, he was released because he did not fit well with the team's new coach. In August 2008, Marc signed with UNICS Kazan in Russia. He announced his retirement from basketball shortly after signing with Obradoiro CAB in 2009.
After Playing Basketball
After his playing career, Marc Jackson became a basketball analyst. He now works for NBC Sports Philadelphia, where he talks about the 76ers games.
