Early Life and College Basketball
Marc Jackson grew up in North Philadelphia. He went to Roman Catholic High School. In 1993, he was a star player. He averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks per game. He helped his team win the Catholic League championship. They also won the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament.
During the ACIT, he was a strong player in the middle. His team beat DeMatha in the final game. Marc was named to the All-Tournament Team for his great performance.
After high school, Marc went to Virginia Commonwealth University. He played there for one year. Then, he moved to Temple University. Temple was very close to his childhood home. He took a year off from playing before joining the team.
Marc played two seasons for the Temple Owls. He was the team's top scorer and rebounder both years. He helped the Owls get a 40–14 record. They also made it to the NCAA Tournament twice. Marc decided to leave college early to enter the NBA draft.
Professional Basketball Career
The Golden State Warriors picked Marc Jackson in the 1997 NBA draft. He was the 37th player chosen overall. Since he was picked in the second round, Marc decided to play in Europe first. He wanted to earn more money for his family. He also wanted to improve his skills before joining the NBA.
He played three years overseas. He played for teams in Turkey and Spain. These teams included Tofaş Bursa, Lobos Caja Cantabria, and Cantabria Lobos. In 2000, he returned to the U.S. and joined the Warriors.
Playing in the NBA
Marc quickly made a big impact with the Warriors. He was the best rookie in points and rebounds. He also had good shooting percentages. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie team. He finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting.
After his first season, Marc signed an offer with the Houston Rockets. The Warriors decided to keep him and matched the offer. Even though he was successful, Marc wanted more playing time. Other players were ahead of him on the team. He was not happy that the Warriors kept him instead of letting him go to another team.
In 2002, the Warriors traded Marc to the Minnesota Timberwolves. There, he played alongside Kevin Garnett. On July 23, 2003, he was traded to his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. This trade involved four different teams.
Marc missed many games in his first season with the 76ers due to an injury. But he played much better the next year. He led the team in rebounds. He was also second in points. This helped the 76ers make it to the playoffs. While playing for Philadelphia, he played both as a center and a power forward.
In 2005, Marc was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Later that season, he was traded again. This time, he went to the New Orleans Hornets. In 2007, he signed with Olympiacos, a team in Greece. However, he was released because he did not fit the new coach's system.
In 2008, Marc signed with UNICS Kazan in Russia. He then signed with Obradoiro CAB in Spain in 2009. Soon after, he announced his retirement from playing basketball.
Life After Playing Basketball
