Marcel Faustiano Augustin Gumbs was born on February 26, 1953. He is a well-known politician from Sint Maarten. From 2014 to 2015, he held an important job as the second Prime Minister of Sint Maarten.

Mr. Gumbs became Prime Minister as part of an agreement. This agreement was made between the United People's Party and two independent Members of Parliament. Their names were Cornelius de Weever and Leona Marlin-Romeo. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was a member of the Sint Maarten Council of Advise. This council gives advice to the government.

Early Life and Education

Marcel Gumbs was born on February 26, 1953. His birthplace was Curaçao, another island in the Caribbean. When he was a child, Gumbs went to the St. Joseph School. This school is located in Sint Maarten.

Marcel Gumbs' Political Journey

Marcel Gumbs started his political career in 1983. He began as an observer in the Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles. He represented the Democratic Party (DP).

In that same year, he tried to get elected. He ran for the Island Council election. However, he did not receive enough votes to win a seat.

Serving in Parliament

In the 1985 parliamentary election, Gumbs tried again. He received 218 votes. This time, he was elected to Parliament for his first term.

In 1990, he was sworn in for his second term. This happened because the DP leader, Claude Wathey, chose not to take his seat. Marcel Gumbs had the next highest number of votes, with 419.

For the 1994 parliamentary election, Gumbs took on a leadership role. He led the Democratic Party. He was elected for a third term. This was his highest vote count ever, with 919 votes.

After the 1998 parliamentary election, he received 416 votes. Following this, Gumbs became a junior minister. He served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Susanne Camelia-Römer.
