Marceline Newlin was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents were Frank and Irene Newlin. Marceline had an older sister named Alice Day, who also became a film actress. Marceline went to Venice High School in Los Angeles.
Becoming a Movie Star
Marceline Day started her movie career after her sister Alice became famous. Alice was one of the "Sennett Bathing Beauties." These actresses appeared in short comedies for Keystone Studios. Marceline first appeared in a film with Alice in 1924. It was a comedy called Picking Peaches.
After that, Marceline starred in many short comedy films. She often worked with actor Harry Langdon. She also appeared in early Hollywood Western movies. In these films, she acted alongside famous silent film cowboys. Some of these stars included Hoot Gibson and Jack Hoxie.
Over time, Marceline began to take on more serious acting roles. She worked with very respected actors of her time. These included Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Buster Keaton, and Lon Chaney.
Rising to Fame in the 1920s
In 1926, Marceline Day received a special honor. She was named one of the 13 WAMPAS Baby Stars. This was a special award given each year. It recognized 13 young women who were thought to be on their way to movie stardom. Other famous actresses who received this award that year were Joan Crawford and Mary Astor.
This award made Marceline even more popular. In 1927, she starred with John Barrymore in The Beloved Rogue. This was a romantic adventure film.
Marceline Day is best known for a few important movies. One was the 1927 horror film London After Midnight. It was directed by Tod Browning and starred Lon Chaney. Sadly, this film is now lost. She also played Sally Richards in the 1928 comedy The Cameraman with Buster Keaton. Another notable film was the 1929 drama The Jazz Age.
By the late 1920s, Marceline's career was even bigger than her sister Alice's. However, the two sisters did appear together again. They were both in the 1929 musical film The Show of Shows.
Life After Silent Films
Marceline Day married Arthur J. Klein in 1930. He was a furrier. Later, she married for a second time in 1959 to John Arthur. He passed away in 1980. Marceline did not have any children.
Marceline was able to act in "talkies" (movies with sound) without much trouble. However, her film roles became less important. She started working mostly for smaller film studios. By 1933, Marceline returned to acting in Western movies. She appeared in "B" Westerns. These were lower-budget films. She worked with actors like Tim McCoy and John Wayne. Her last movie was The Fighting Parson in 1933.
After she stopped acting, Marceline Day rarely talked about her time as an actress. She never gave interviews to reporters.
Later Years and Passing
Marceline Day passed away on February 16, 2000. She was 91 years old. She was found in her home in Cathedral City, California. Her body was cremated.
