Marco Marchionni is a famous Italian football coach and a former player. He was born on July 22, 1980. Marco played as a midfielder, which means he helped both defend and attack on the field. He was known for being able to play in different midfield spots.

Marco was very good at running fast and dribbling the ball. He could also make great passes and crosses, helping his teammates score goals. Today, he is the head coach for the Ravenna football club.

Marco's Football Journey as a Player

Starting His Career

Marco Marchionni began his professional football journey in 1998 with Empoli F.C.. Before that, he played for a team called Monterotondo. While at Empoli, he helped their youth team win a special tournament called the Torneo di Viareggio in 2000.

After three seasons with Empoli, Marco moved to Parma in 2001. He won the 2001–02 Coppa Italia with Parma, which is a big cup competition in Italy. He didn't play much in his first two years at Parma. So, in 2003, he went on loan to Piacenza to get more playing time and improve his skills.

Becoming a Star at Parma

Marco's time at Piacenza helped him a lot. He played so well that Parma called him back for the 2003–04 season. Under coach Cesare Prandelli, Marco really shined. He played 35 games and scored six goals in Serie A (Italy's top league) and the UEFA Cup. His amazing performances even earned him his first call-up to the Italian national team!

The next season was also good for Marco, as he played 32 games and scored six goals. The 2005–06 season was his best with Parma. He helped the team a lot by setting up goals and creating chances. He played 31 games and scored four goals, helping Parma avoid being moved down to a lower league. Because he was so talented and still young, Juventus noticed him and signed him in June 2006.

Playing for Juventus

In the 2006–07 season, Marco Marchionni agreed to play for Juventus even though they were in Serie B (the second division). He helped his team win the league title that season, which meant they were promoted back to Serie A. His good play also led to him being called back to the national team.

The 2007–08 season was tough for Marco because he had many injuries. He missed most of the season and only played 11 league games, scoring one goal.

Before the 2008–09 season, Marco was in great shape during friendly games. He hoped to stay healthy and play well in the UEFA Champions League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia for Juventus. When Juventus's main winger, Mauro Camoranesi, was injured, Marco stepped up. He played very well, even scoring a goal against A.S. Roma.

Moving to Fiorentina

On July 6, 2009, ACF Fiorentina agreed to sign Marco Marchionni from Juventus. He officially signed with Fiorentina on July 15, 2009, after playing three years for Juventus. He joined his former coach from Parma, Cesare Prandelli, and some old teammates like Sébastien Frey and Alberto Gilardino.

Marco scored his first goal for Fiorentina against Genoa on October 28, 2009. The next week, he scored two goals against Catania and another goal in a Champions League match against Debreceni.

Returning to Parma and Other Clubs

On September 14, 2012, Marco Marchionni rejoined Parma on a free transfer after leaving Fiorentina. He played for Parma for two more seasons.

Later, on August 27, 2014, Marco moved to U.C. Sampdoria. He then joined U.S. Latina Calcio on August 31, 2015. His last club as a player was Carrarese, where he played until 2018.

Playing for Italy

Youth National Team

Marco Marchionni played for the Italy U21 team from 2000 to 2002. He played 18 games and scored two goals. He was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.

Senior National Team

Marco made his first appearance for the senior national team on November 12, 2003, in a friendly game against Poland. He was one of the backup players for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, ready to step in if anyone got injured. However, he didn't play in the tournament.

Even though he was playing in Serie B with Juventus in 2006, he was called up to the Italian national team again in September 2006. He played in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying match against Lithuania. On August 30, 2009, he was called up again after three years away from the national team. He played in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Georgia. In total, he played six games for Italy between 2003 and 2009.

Marco's Coaching Career

After he stopped playing football, Marco Marchionni decided to become a coach. He stayed at Carrarese and became an assistant coach.

In October 2020, he became the head coach of Foggia. On September 11, 2021, he was hired by Novara in Serie D. In his first season with Novara, he helped them win their group title, which meant they were promoted back to Serie C.

Marco left Novara in August 2022 but was rehired in January 2023. He helped them finish in the middle of the league table. In June 2023, Novara and Marchionni parted ways again.

On December 28, 2023, Marco became the new head coach of Potenza, a Serie C club. He was dismissed from this role in April 2024.

Currently, as of October 25, 2024, Marco Marchionni is the head coach of Ravenna, a club in Serie D.
