Marco Marchionni's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Marco Marchionni began his professional football journey with Empoli F.C. in 1998. Before that, he played for a team called Monterotondo. In 2000, he won the Torneo di Viareggio with Empoli's youth team. After three seasons, he moved to Parma in 2001. There, he helped Parma win the 2001–02 Coppa Italia, which is a big Italian cup competition.
In his first two years at Parma, Marco didn't play much. So, he was sent on loan to Piacenza for part of the 2002–03 season. This helped him get more playing time and improve his skills. He played so well that Parma called him back. He became a regular player for Parma in the 2003–04 season.
Under coach Cesare Prandelli, Marco really shined. He played 35 games and scored six goals in Serie A and the UEFA Cup. His great performances led to him being called up to play for the Italian national team for the first time. The next season was also good, with 32 games and six goals. The 2005–06 season was his best with Parma. He helped the team a lot, giving many assists and creating chances. He played 31 games, scored four goals, and helped Parma avoid being moved down to a lower league. Because of his talent, Juventus signed him for free in June 2006.
Playing for Juventus
In the 2006–07 season, Marco agreed to play for Juventus in Serie B. This was a lower league for Juventus at the time. He quickly helped his team win the league title. This meant Juventus was promoted back to Serie A, the top Italian league. His good play also led to him being called back to the national team.
During the 2007–08 season, Marco had many injuries. This kept him off the field for most of the season. He only started one game but played in eleven league matches, scoring one goal.
Before the 2008–09 Serie A season, Marco was in great shape. He played well in all the friendly games. He hoped to stay healthy and play well in the UEFA Champions League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia with Juventus. He quickly became an important player when the main winger, Mauro Camoranesi, was injured. Marco played brilliantly, even scoring a goal against A.S. Roma.
Time with Fiorentina
On July 6, 2009, ACF Fiorentina agreed to buy Marco Marchionni from Juventus. He signed a contract with Fiorentina on July 15, 2009. He had spent three years with Juventus, playing 78 games and scoring seven goals. This move was part of a deal where midfielder Felipe Melo went to Juventus.
At Fiorentina, Marco joined his old coach Cesare Prandelli from Parma. He also played with former Parma teammates like Sébastien Frey and Alberto Gilardino. He scored his first goal for Fiorentina against Genoa on October 28, 2009. The next week, he scored two goals against Catania. He also scored in a Champions League game against Debreceni.
Later Club Teams
On September 14, 2012, Marco Marchionni returned to Parma. He joined them for free after leaving Fiorentina.
On August 27, 2014, Marco moved to U.C. Sampdoria. This was part of a player exchange deal.
On August 31, 2015, Sampdoria sold Marco to U.S. Latina Calcio for free.
He later played for Carrarese from 2017 to 2018.
Playing for Italy
Marco Marchionni played for the Italy U21 team from 2000 to 2002. He played 18 games and scored two goals. He was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
Marco made his first appearance for the senior national team on November 12, 2003. This was in a friendly game against Poland. For the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he was one of four backup players. This meant he would play if someone in the main squad got injured. However, he did not play in the tournament and so did not receive a winner's medal.
Even though he was playing in Serie B with Juventus, he was called up to the Italian national team again in September 2006. He played in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying match against Lithuania. On August 30, 2009, he was called up again after three years. He played in Italy's 2–0 win against Georgia. In total, he played six games for Italy between 2003 and 2009.

On September 11, 2021, he was hired by Novara in Serie D. In his first season, he led Novara to win their group title. This meant Novara was immediately promoted back to Serie C.
Marco left Novara in August 2022 but was rehired in January 2023. He guided them to a mid-table finish. However, Novara announced in June 2023 that they had parted ways with him again.
