Early Life

Marcus Almeida grew up in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil. When he was 14, his sister started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His father, Clayton, wanted Marcus to go with her to the gym. Soon, Marcus and his father also started training jiu-jitsu.

Both Marcus and his father became black belts. His father even won an IBJJF Masters World Championship. Marcus's coach, Rodrigo Cavaca, gave him the nickname Buchecha. This means cheek and was because he had chubby cheeks when he was younger. Almeida competes as part of the Checkmat team.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

ONE Championship

Marcus Almeida had been thinking about moving to mixed martial arts since 2015. In July 2020, he signed a contract with ONE Championship. He trains for mixed martial arts at the American Kickboxing Academy. He competes in the heavyweight division.

Almeida was supposed to fight in MMA for the first time in 2021. However, he had to delay his debut due to injuries. After recovering, he was set to face Kang Ji-Won, but Kang also withdrew.

Almeida finally made his MMA debut on September 24, 2021. He fought Anderson “Braddock” Silva at ONE Championship: Revolution. Almeida won the fight in the first round using a move called a north-south choke.

On December 3, 2021, Almeida faced Kang Ji-Won at ONE: Winter Warriors. He won again in the first round with a rear-naked choke.

In 2022, Almeida was scheduled to fight Oumar "Reug Reug" Kane. The fight was moved and then canceled because of injuries and illness. Almeida then fought Simon Carson at ONE 158 on June 3, 2022. He won by TKO in the first round. He stopped Carson with punches while on the ground.

Almeida fought Kirill Grishenko at ONE on Prime Video 1 on August 27, 2022. He won early in the first round with a heel hook submission. This win earned him a Performance of the Night award.

On August 5, 2023, Almeida faced Oumar Kane at ONE Fight Night 13. He lost this fight by a unanimous decision.

A movie about his life, called Buchecha: Far Beyond World Records, came out in 2023.
