Mardella is a small place located outside of Perth, in Western Australia. It's about 41 kilometers (25 miles) south-east of Perth's city center. Mardella is part of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. In 2011, about 303 people lived there. Even though it's near a big city, Mardella feels more like the countryside. Many people who live here work on farms.

A Look at Mardella's Past

Mardella gets its name from a farm called Mardella Farm. This farm was started when Europeans first settled in the area. The name Mardella, and also Medulla Brook nearby, come from an old Aboriginal word.

How Mardella Got Its Name

People have used the name Mardella for this area since at least 1898. That's when a train stop, or "siding," was opened on the South Western Railway line. But Mardella only officially became a suburb in 1997.

Community Life in Mardella

In the 1950s, people in the community built a hall for everyone to use. At one time, Mardella even had its own general store, where people could buy everyday things.

Exploring Mardella's Geography

Mardella is a place with natural beauty, including rivers and bushland. It also has important roads that connect it to other towns.

Rivers and Streams

The Serpentine River flows right through Mardella. It forms parts of the western and southern edges of the suburb. There's also a smaller stream called Medulla Brook. This stream is "ephemeral," meaning it only flows with water at certain times of the year, usually after rain.

Land and Nature

The western part of Mardella has a lot of "bushland." This means it's land that hasn't been cleared for farming or building. There's also a small forest of pine trees. The rest of Mardella is mostly farmland, where people grow crops or raise animals.

Roads and Connections

The eastern edge of Mardella is next to the South Western Highway. This important road connects Perth to the South West region of Western Australia. Part of Mardella's northern boundary is where a new section of the Tonkin Highway might be built in the future.
