History of Marden
Marden started as a small community along Payneham Road. It offered services to people traveling between Athelstone and Adelaide city. The area was known for its market gardens. These gardens were located near the River Torrens. They had a good supply of fresh water from Third Creek and the Torrens River.
Marden later became part of the Payneham Council. The council's main office was located in Marden. This office was at the corner of O.G. Road and Payneham Road. In the 1990s, Marden joined the Norwood and St Peters Council.
Some buildings in Marden are very old. They were built before Australia became a federation in 1901. However, most of the homes were built after World War Two. Many apartments and units can be found south of Lower Portrush Road. This is especially true near Broad Street.
