Marga Marga Province (which is Provincia de Marga Marga in Spanish) is one of the eight provinces located in the central Valparaíso region of Chile. Its capital city is Quilpué.

History of Marga Marga

How the Province Was Formed

Marga Marga Province is quite new! It was officially created by a special law on August 25, 2009. The province started working on March 11, 2010.

To form this new province, some areas were moved from other provinces. Two cities, Quilpué and Villa Alemana, came from Valparaíso Province. Two other cities, Limache and Olmué, joined from Quillota Province. All these areas came together to make Marga Marga Province.

How Marga Marga is Governed

Provincial Administration

Marga Marga is a second-level administrative division in Chile. This means it's a major area within a larger region. It is governed by a special person called a provincial delegate. The President of Chile chooses this delegate to lead the province.

Cities and Towns (Communes)

The province is made up of four main areas, which are called communes. Each commune has its own local government. This government includes an alcalde (which is like a mayor) and a group of people called a municipal council.

The four communes in Marga Marga Province are:

Geography and People

Size and Population

Marga Marga Province covers a land area of about 1,159.0 square kilometers. This makes it the sixth largest province in the Valparaíso Region. It doesn't have any coastline; it's a landlocked area.

Before the province was officially created, a count of people (called a census) was done in 2002. If we add up the people from all the areas that now form Marga Marga, there were 277,525 people living there. This made it the second most populated province in the Valparaíso Region at that time.

Urban and Rural Areas

Most people in Marga Marga Province live in urban areas, which means cities and towns. About 267,022 people lived in these urban areas. A smaller number, about 10,503 people, lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside.

Gender Distribution

The 2002 census also showed how many men and women lived in the area. There were about 133,605 men and 143,920 women living in the communes that now form Marga Marga Province.
