Margaret of England was a royal princess born on July 20, 1346. Her parents were King Edward III of England and Queen Philippa of Hainault. She was born in Windsor, England, and was also known as Margaret of Windsor. Sadly, she passed away between October and December 1361, when she was about 15 years old.
A Princess's Marriages
As a princess, Margaret's marriage was important for her family and country. Her first possible husband was Albert III of Austria. However, this plan changed because of political reasons at the time.
A few years later, she was promised in marriage to John of Blois. He was the son of Charles of Blois. John of Blois was also a rival to John V of Brittany for the throne of Brittany. But this engagement was also called off. This was because Margaret's sister, Mary, was already promised to John IV of Brittany.
Marriage to John Hastings
Margaret grew up with John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke. John was the son of Laurence Hastings, 1st Earl of Pembroke. His mother was Agnes. As children, Margaret and John were very close friends.
On May 13, 1359, Margaret married John Hastings. This was in the same week her brother, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, married Blanche of Lancaster. Both weddings took place in Reading.
Early Death
Just two years after her marriage, Princess Margaret died. She was buried at Abingdon Abbey. We do not know the exact date or cause of her death. The last time she was mentioned as being alive was on October 1, 1361.
