Early Life of Princess Margaret
Princess Margaret was born early on Christmas Eve in 1598. Her parents were King James VI of Scotland and Queen Anne of Denmark. She was born at Dalkeith Castle in Scotland.
Before she was born, workers prepared a special nursery for her. They made sure there was a cradle, a bed, and chairs for her nurse and the ladies who would help care for her.
Princess Margaret's Baptism
Princess Margaret's baptism was planned for April 15, 1599. It was delayed because the winter was very cold. People worried the baby princess might get sick if the ceremony happened too soon.
King James VI invited many important people to the baptism. He also asked them to bring gifts for the celebration. The event took place at Holyrood House.
The celebrations were grand, with lots of food, dancing, and special games. These games included "running at the ring" and "running at the glove," which were like jousting tournaments. Many important nobles attended, such as the Duke of Lennox and the Earl of Mar.
Growing Up at Linlithgow Palace
After her baptism, Princess Margaret and her older sister, Princess Elizabeth, moved to Linlithgow Palace. They were cared for by Lord Livingston and his wife, Lady Livingston.
Princess Margaret had a wet nurse named Helena Crichton. Other staff helped rock her cradle and wash her clothes.
Princess Margaret's Death and Burial
In March 1600, Princess Margaret became very ill. Doctors and apothecaries (who prepared medicines) were called to help her. However, they could not save her.
Princess Margaret died sometime in March 1600, though the exact date was not recorded. She was just over one year old.
After her death, her body was prepared for burial. She was transported from Linlithgow to Edinburgh. Princess Margaret was privately buried in Holyrood Abbey, a historic church in Edinburgh.
