Margie Hines (born October 15, 1909 – died December 23, 1985) was an American voice actress. She was famous for giving voices to popular cartoon characters.

Margie Hines worked at Fleischer Studios. She was the first voice of Betty Boop from 1930 to 1932. She returned to voice Betty Boop again from 1938 to 1939. Later, she became the voice of Olive Oyl and Swee' Pea in the Popeye the Sailor cartoons. She voiced these characters from 1938 to 1944. Margie Hines also lent her voice to two animated movies by Fleischer: Gulliver's Travels and Mr. Bug Goes to Town.

Margie Hines's Career

Becoming Betty Boop's Voice

Margie Hines was the first voice for the cartoon character Betty Boop. She was performing on stage in a type of show called vaudeville. A singer named Billy Murray heard her. He worked at Fleischer Studios. Billy Murray thought Margie Hines would be perfect for Betty Boop.

The head of the studio, Max Fleischer, hired her. This was because her voice sounded a lot like Helen Kane. Helen Kane was a singer who inspired the Betty Boop character. Margie Hines first appeared as Betty Boop in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes in 1930. She and other actresses voiced Betty until Mae Questel took over the role in 1931.

Other Early Voice Roles

Starting in 1932, Margie Hines also did voices for other cartoons. These included Aesop's Film Fables and Tom and Jerry. These cartoons were made by Van Beuren Studios.

Returning to Famous Characters

Mae Questel was the main voice for Betty Boop and Popeye's characters, Olive Oyl and Swee'Pea. This was during the mid-1930s. However, Fleischer Studios moved from New York City to Miami. Mae Questel could not move with them.

Because of this, Margie Hines was hired again. She replaced Mae Questel for both the Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons. This began in 1938. Margie Hines voiced Betty Boop until the character's last cartoon in 1939. She continued to voice Olive Oyl until 1943. By then, Paramount Pictures had taken over the studio. It was renamed Famous Studios. The studio then moved back to New York. Margie Hines's last cartoon as Olive Oyl was The Marry-Go-Round in 1943. Mae Questel returned to voice Olive Oyl in 1944.
