Margo Kitsy Brodie (born 1966 as Margo Kitsy Williams) is a very important judge in the United States. She is the main judge, called the Chief Judge, for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She took on this big role on February 1, 2021.
Early Life and Education
Margo Kitsy Brodie was born in St. John's, Antigua. She went to St. Francis College in Brooklyn. In 1988, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. This is like getting a four-year college degree.
Then, in 1991, she earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. This special degree is needed to become a lawyer.
Her Career as a Lawyer
After finishing law school, Margo Brodie started her career. From 1991 to 1994, she worked for the New York City Law Department. This is a government office that handles legal matters for the city.
Next, she worked at a law firm called Carter, Ledyard & Millburn from 1994 to 1999. A law firm is a business where lawyers work together to help people with legal issues.
In 1999, she joined the office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Here, she worked as an assistant United States attorney. This means she was a lawyer who represented the U.S. government in court.
She held several important positions in that office:
- From 2006 to 2007, she was Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section.
- From 2007 to 2009, she became Chief of the General Crimes Section.
- From 2009 to 2010, she was a Counselor to the Criminal Division.
- From 2010 to 2012, she served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On June 7, 2011, President Barack Obama chose Margo Brodie to become a judge. He nominated her for a position on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. This position became open when Judge Allyne R. Ross took "senior status," which means she moved to a less active role.
The United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a meeting about her nomination on September 7, 2011. This committee checks if people are good choices for judge roles. On October 6, 2011, the committee approved her nomination.
Finally, on February 27, 2012, the United States Senate voted to confirm her. This means they officially approved her to be a judge. She received her official document, called a commission, on February 29, 2012.
On February 1, 2021, Judge Brodie became the Chief Judge of the court. This is a very important leadership role among the judges.
