Maria Petrou FREng (Greek: Μαρία Πέτρου; 17 May 1953 – 15 October 2012) was a brilliant scientist from Greece. She also became a British citizen. Maria was an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine vision. These fields teach computers to "see" and understand images, much like humans do. She created many new ways for computers to recognize images. Maria taught at important universities like Surrey University and Imperial College London. She also wrote many scientific articles and books.

Early Life and Learning

Maria Petrou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1953. From a young age, she showed a great talent for science. When she was just 15, she started helping younger kids with their math and science homework.

She studied physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. After that, she moved to the United Kingdom. There, she studied mathematics and astronomy at the famous University of Cambridge. In 1983, Maria began working as a researcher at Oxford University. She worked in the Department of Theoretical Physics.

Amazing Artificial Intelligence Research

In the 1980s, science in Britain started to focus more on practical uses. Maria Petrou then began to study machine vision. This is a part of robotic intelligence that helps robots "see" and understand the world around them.

In 1988, she started working at the University of Surrey. She became a Professor of Image Analysis there in 1998. Later, she held a top position at Imperial College London. From 2009 until she passed away, Maria was also a director at a research center in Greece. She was even chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a very high honor for engineers.

New Ways to See with Computers

During her career, Maria developed many important ways for computers to recognize images. For example, she created methods for robots to analyze textures. She also found new ways for computers to compare images and measure things in 3D.

One of her most famous inventions was the trace transform. She created this with Dr. Alexander Kadyrov. The trace transform is a special way to represent images. It helps facial recognition systems work much better and faster.

Real-World Uses of Her Work

Technologies based on Maria Petrou's work have been used in many different areas. They help businesses, doctors, and even environmental scientists. For example, her ideas might help machines sort products, assist in medical scans, or monitor changes in nature.

Maria also had a fun side! She was an amateur cartoonist. Once, she challenged her colleagues to build a robot that could iron clothes. This challenge later grew into a big robotics project funded by the European Union.

Personal Life

Maria Petrou married Phil L. Palmer, who was a British astronomer. They had one son together before they divorced. Maria passed away in October 2012, when she was 59 years old.
