Mariano Emilio Bustamante y Mantilla (born August 5, 1831 – died June 7, 1880) was a brave Peruvian hero. He fought in the War of the Pacific, a big conflict between Chile and Peru. He took part in important battles like San Francisco, Tarapacá, and Arica. Sadly, he was killed during the Battle of Arica while fighting for his country.

Mariano Bustamante was born in a small town called Tingo, close to the city of Arequipa, Peru. He joined the army and became a colonel during the war. On June 7, 1880, he died during the fierce Battle of Arica. About half of the soldiers defending Arica also lost their lives that day. He worked closely with Colonel Alfonso Ugarte and was part of the group led by Colonel Francisco Bolognesi.

A Hero's Promise: Defending Arica

Before the Battle of Arica began, the Chilean army offered the Peruvian soldiers a chance to give up. But Mariano Bustamante and other Peruvian officers bravely said no. They refused to surrender. This led Colonel Bolognesi to make a famous promise to the Chilean messenger. He declared that they would defend their position "to the last cartridge." This meant they would fight until they ran out of ammunition.

Remembering Mariano Bustamante

Today, a military base in the Mariano Melgar District of Arequipa is named after him. This honors his courage and sacrifice for Peru.
