Mariano Padilla y Ramos (born July 18, 1843 – died November 21, 1906) was a talented Spanish opera singer. He was a baritone, which means he sang in a lower male voice. Mariano was especially famous for playing the main character in Mozart's opera, Don Giovanni.
Early Life and Career
Mariano Padilla y Ramos was born in Murcia, Spain. His father, Antonio Marco Padilla, was a city attorney. Mariano had five brothers.
He studied music in Florence, Italy, with a teacher named Teodulo Mabellini. After his studies, Mariano traveled and performed in many countries across Europe. He sang in England in 1881, performing in an opera called Dinorah. He also performed at the Royal Opera House in London in 1887. That same year, he sang in Prague for a special celebration of Don Giovanni's 100th anniversary.
Marriage and Family
Mariano Padilla y Ramos is also well-known for marrying a famous Belgian singer named Désirée Artôt. This marriage surprised many people, especially the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who had a close friendship with Artôt.
Désirée Artôt had met Tchaikovsky in Russia in 1868. They became very fond of each other and even talked about getting married. However, Artôt had to continue her opera tours. She left for Warsaw, planning to meet Tchaikovsky later.
Without telling Tchaikovsky, Artôt married Mariano Padilla y Ramos on September 15, 1869. They were both part of the same opera company. Mariano was seven years younger than Artôt.
Mariano and Désirée had a daughter named Lola Artôt de Padilla. She also became a very successful opera singer, just like her parents.
Mariano Padilla y Ramos passed away in Paris, France, in November 1906. He was 63 years old. His wife, Désirée Artôt, died just four months later.
