Becoming Duchess of Savoy
Marie Jeanne was born a princess in Paris, France. Her family was part of the House of Savoy, a very old and important royal family.
In 1662, she was supposed to marry Charles V, Duke of Lorraine. This marriage was agreed upon, but Charles of Lorraine later changed his mind.
However, Marie Jeanne soon found another husband. In 1665, she married her cousin, Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy. This made her the Duchess of Savoy.
Ruling as Regent
Marie Jeanne and Charles Emmanuel II had one son, Victor Amadeus II. He would later become a king.
When her husband, Duke Charles Emmanuel II, died in 1675, their son Victor Amadeus II was still very young. Because of this, Marie Jeanne became the Regent of Savoy. A regent is someone who rules a country when the rightful ruler is too young or unable to do so.
She was known as Madama Reale, which means Royal Madam. She officially stopped being regent in 1680. However, she continued to have a lot of power for four more years. Eventually, her son, Victor Amadeus II, decided he wanted to rule on his own. He asked her to step back from influencing the government.
Her Legacy in Turin
Marie Jeanne left a big mark on the city of Turin, which was the capital of Savoy. She was very interested in architecture and building projects.
She was in charge of redesigning the Palazzo Madama. This beautiful palace was her private home. Today, it is a famous museum in Turin.
When Marie Jeanne passed away in 1724, her son, Victor Amadeus II, was the King of Sardinia. She was also the great-grandmother of the King of Spain and the King of France.
Understanding Her Name
Marie Jeanne's full name in French was Marie Jeanne Baptiste de Savoie. In Italian, it was Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia.
Sometimes people mistakenly add "Nemours" to her name. This is not correct. She was a daughter of a Duke of Nemours, but it was not part of her official title or name. Most people know her simply as Marie Jeanne of Savoy.
Her Son, Victor Amadeus II
Marie Jeanne had one child:
- Victor Amadeus II (born May 4, 1666 – died October 31, 1732). He married Anne Marie d'Orléans and they had children. Victor Amadeus II later became the King of Sardinia.
